{"id":73,"date":"2014-05-19T11:54:29","date_gmt":"2014-05-19T11:54:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vishnushivamandir.org.au\/new\/?p=73"},"modified":"2014-05-19T11:54:29","modified_gmt":"2014-05-19T11:54:29","slug":"samskaras","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vishnushivamandir.org.au\/new\/samskaras\/","title":{"rendered":"Samskaras"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Samskar means \u201cpurificatory rite.\u201d The grihastha couple joyfully imparts the Vedic samskaras, right from his\/her birth and thus help the child to eventually attain the spiritual platform.<\/h4>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201c Janmana jayate shudrah samskarat bhavet dvijah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>By birth, everyone is a shoodra, but by performance of samskaras one becomes a\u00a0brhamana.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>These deliberate &amp; positive impressions which help create a deep &amp; lasting impressions on the mind of a person &#8211; so as to generate interest in him about the Dharma, help bring out a positive personality and free the mind of its negativities are called \u2018Samskaras\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Samskaras are the turning points of life and need to be celebrated. Celebrations are very important ingredients of Samskaras. They directly or indirectly involve our respected elders, scholars, near &amp; dear ones. Everyone gets together to convey their best wishes &amp; blessings to the person concerned. Apart from scriptural validation, history also proves to us the great effectiveness of these methods.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There are sixteen Samskaras of Hindus which cover the entire life span of a person and take him to the door steps to Truth.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h4>The Sixteen Samskaras<\/h4>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>1. \u00a0<strong>Garbhadan<\/strong>: \u00a0The first coming together of the husband &amp; wife for bringing about conception.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>2. <strong>Pumsvana<\/strong>: Ceremony performed when the first signs of conception are seen, and is to be performed when someone desires a male child.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>3. <strong>Seemantonayana<\/strong>: \u00a0\u00a0A ceremony of parting of the hairs of the expectant mother to keep her spirits high &amp; positive. Special music is arranged for her.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>4. <strong>Jatakarma<\/strong>: After the birth of the child, the child is given a secret name, he is given taste of honey &amp; ghee, mother starts the first breast-feeding after chanting of a mantra.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>5. <strong>Nama-karana<\/strong>: In this ceremony the child is given a formal name. Performed on the 11th day.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>6. <strong>Nishkramana<\/strong>: In this the formal darshan of sun &amp; moon is done for the child.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>7. <strong>Annaprashana<\/strong>: \u00a0This ceremony is performed, when the child is given solid food (anna) for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>8. <strong>Choodakarana<\/strong>:Chooda means the &#8216;lock of hair&#8217; kept after the remaining part is shaved off.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>9. <strong>Karna-vedha<\/strong>: \u00a0Done in 7th or 8th month. Piercing of the ears.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>10. <strong>Upanayan &amp; Vedarambha:<\/strong>\u00a0 The thread ceremony.(Yajnopaveeta) The child is thereafter authorised to perform all rituals.
